Willard Wigan: Microsculptor
"Hulk" by Willard Wigan
You know that "micro" means really-teeny, super-tiny, you can't see it without expensive machines, right?
Well, this artist's work is so small that viewers need to look through an actual MICROSCOPE to see it because his work is MICROSCOPIC. This art fits inside the eye of an actual needle and can stand on the head of an honest to goodness pin.
When he was a school kid, he had dyslexia, but no one knew it, no one cared, and no one helped. He couldn't learn to read, and he was ridiculed for it- even by his teacher. He started making tiny things- like little houses for ants- because he wished he could just disappear.
As an adult, he learned to slow down his breath, heartbeat and nervous system so that his hands wouldn't move when he worked. How does he paint these tiny "art meets science" wonders? With the hair of a dead house fly, that's how. You have to check it out for yourself. Click HERE.

ART CARS!!!
What do you get if you cross a buffalo, some metal, a ton of broken glass & ceramic and lots of plastic toys with a 1984 Chevy Camero?
Take a guess! YEP! You get THIS!
This art car, titled "Faith", by David Best, is one of many you'll find on display at the Art Car Museum in Houston, TX. But you don't have to travel that far for a wild ride. There are art cars almost everywhere! There's a great one at the American Visionary Art Museum and loads of amazing homemade art covered transportation during the Kinetic Sculpture Race in Baltimore every spring. This goes waaay beyond tricking out your ride! (8/28/12)

TEEN ART EVENTS
AT THE
Baltimore Museum of Art!!
"Creation" by Gaia at North and Charles streets in Baltimore. Photo Credit: Martha Cooper, published in The Urbanite 3/6/12
The schedule of art events for teens at the BMA, a fabulous local museum, is AWESOME:
-Mosaics with local gem Rick Shelley
-Costume design based on the museum's textile collection
-A one day workshop with uber-famous street artist Gaia. He lived in Baltimore for years and has used his art to support the Edgar Allan Poe house and to revitalize, or at least bring attention to, the Howard Street corridor. I have seen "Creation" (see photo above) and many of his other works many times. In person, they are both arresting and overwhelming.
This is probably the ONE thing that would convince me to be a teenager again for just a few more days. Click HERE to link to events, dates, cost and info. If any of you go, TELL ME. I will be jealous in the best possible way ;-) (8/28/12)
