Welcome to art class with Ms. Mitchell!
HI! I'm Ms. Mitchell, and I LOVE teaching and making art. This is my 6th year teaching at Patapsco. I had my art training starting at 9 with lessons at the Baltimore Museum of Art. At 13, I enrolled at Baltimore School for the Arts. I earned my Bachelors in Fine Arts and Masters in Art Education at the Maryland Institute College of Art. That's a whole lotta art school!
Lots of kids think that if they can't draw well now, they never will. Did you read how much I studied and practiced? Art is truly like an instrument: improvement comes with PRACTICE. You'll play sour notes and you'll make drawings you don't like. Never let that stop you. The amazing art within you is just waiting to be born.
"But Ms. Mitchell!! I don't know WHAT to draw!" Ok. How 'bout EVERYTHING! Your cat, your foot, your breakfast, a tree, your reflection, a toy, the clouds, a car, a soda can-anything you can think of! This is called Observational Drawing, and it is the FAST TRACK for improvement. As you challenge yourself, you WILL SEE proportions, shapes colors, textures, light and shadow in ways you never imagined.
In class, you'll have the opportunity to develop these skills. Every year we create two and three dimensional work. Over the course of 6th, 7th and 8th grades we will work with pencil, charcoal, watercolor, acrylic, paper mache, clay, pastel, color pencil, collage and much more.
I am eager to see your growth over the 3 years I will be working with you. Don't be shy! Just TRY TRY TRY! :)
